Words have been hard to come by as I’ve been reflecting on my recent travels to Cuba. However, they will come soon.
In the meantime, I’ve followed the suggested assignment from my father to tell my story in just pictures (I started with 1800). Each one of these has been carefully selected because they share more than just the initial image. There are stories behind each one. They were carefully captured and later intentionally chosen to be the final storytellers of my journey. Should I try this again in a year, the selection might change. But my story lives in the present moment and thus so do these images.
I hope through these 20 images I can bring to you just a glimmer of inspiration and intrigue at the nation of Cuba.
Miami airport and the craziness that is bringing “stuff” into Cuba. In green film, nonetheless.
Water and cheap rum. And more water.
The view from my hotel window that spoke volumes and lured me to sleep each night.
The beautiful and delectable produce that we came to research and that is still out of the financial reach of most Cubans.
“Hasta la Victoria Siempre” (until victory, always!)
From the streets of Old Havana
From the streets of Old Havana, a city stuck in 1950’s America and struggling to survive in the 21st century.
Viva Cuba!
May there be peace in this world, even to hated nations such as the U.S.
Canning. Preserving. Surviving. Organic.
This is how Cuba values its future.
“Fidel’s programs inspired me to be woman of social justice.”
Viva Jose Marti.
Havana from the eyes of a 1950s taxi.
“Now is no time to think of what you do not have. Think of what you can do with what there is.” Ernest Hemingway in “Old Man and the Sea”
Yep, social justice can grow just about anywhere and with anything.
Vegetarian food in Cuba. Not an oxymoron at El Romero.
Caves in Vinales.
Just how do you make coffee again?
Born to run free.
